Vice Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Barack Obama surprised Vice President Joe Biden on January 12 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor. President Obama invited Biden and his wife Jill for what he said was a private goodbye in the White House. Instead, friends and colleagues of Biden were all there as Obama presented the medal for the final time in his presidency. Biden appeared to break down in tears and turned around to compose himself before accepting the medal during the taped ceremony. Obama called Biden “his brother” and said “My family is so proud to call ourselves honorary Bidens.”
