Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting
On January 6th, 2017, Esteban Santiago went to baggage claim in the Fort Lauderdale airport to retrieve the gun he had packed in a piece of checked luggage. He then took out his gun and proceeded to fire at other people that were traveling on that Friday afternoon. Santiago, who was a security guard in Alaska, killed five individuals, in addition to wounding six others. The motive remains unknown, but terrorism has not been ruled out yet. Santiago has been charged with using a firearm with motives of violence, performing an act of violence in an airport, and causing death through use of a firearm. Due to two out of the three charges, Santiago is facing the possibility of the death penalty.
