On January 6, the US intelligence community declassified a report which concluded that Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign to hurt Secretary Clinton’s chances of winning the 2016 presidential election and create distrust in the American political system.  The report stated that Russia was responsible for the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and then the releasing of their private information through third-party websites, among them being WikiLeaks.  Russian officials also paid individuals to act as social media “trolls” and undermine American’s faith in their democratic process.  In response to these cyber attacks, President Obama has expelled thirty-five Russian intelligence operatives from the United States and placed sanctions on two Russian intelligence services.
