Pompeo Confirmed as Secretary of State
America has a new Secretary of State. On Thursday, the Senate confirmed Mike Pompeo, the current director of the CIA, as Secretary of State for the Trump administration. After Trump fired Rex Tillerson, Pompeo became a trusted advisor to Trump during his time at the head of the CIA and agrees with Trump on foreign policy issues. Many Democrats opposed Pompeo’s nomination because of his “hawkish foreign policy views,” but he won enough support to be confirmed. Pompeo’s first act as Secretary of State will be a trip to Brussels, Belgium, for a NATO military alliance meeting. Gina Haspel will replace Pompeo as CIA director, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
