Last Male Northern White Rhino Dies
In a sad day for the wildlife and conservation world, the last male northern white rhino in the world died on Tuesday. The rhino, named Sudan, lived in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and died at 45 years old of problems associated with age. There are two remaining female northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu, who are Sudan’s descendants. Scientists are searching for ways to save the species, including having the females mate with southern white rhinos or by conception through IVF with Sudan’s genetic material. Poaching has caused the northern white rhino species’ demise, but researchers hold on to the possibility of bringing the animals back in the future.
