Syria's Chemical Weapons Program, Feat. North Korea
A report from a panel of United Nations experts asserts that North Korea has been sending chemical weapons supplies, like acid-resistant tiles, valves, and thermometers, to the Syrian government since 2012. In the civil war that has been devastating Syria since 2011, Assad has used chemical weapons on civilians residing in rebel-held territories, which is estimated to have killed thousands. In their investigation into North Korean sanctions violations, the U.N. panel determined that North Korea sent at least 40 shipments to Syria from 2012 to 2017. North Korea has been hit with countless sanctions by the international community to contain its authoritarianism and nuclear weapons program. Also, in 2013, Syria was forced to join the Chemical Weapons Convention, hand over a list of all its chemical weapons stocks, and end the building of more. The report shows that these mandates are clearly not the full reality for either country.
