China Set to Abolish Presidential Term Limits
It looks like the ruling Chinese Community Party will remove Presidential term limits as Xi Jingping, the current Chinese president, approaches his second term. The constitutional change would allow Xi, the most powerful figure in China since Mao Zedong, to rule indefinitely as he continues centralizing power through his anti-corruption reforms and increasing an assertive foreign policy for China. It is unlikely, though, that Xi will rule for life as China experts argue that the political chaos following the death of Mao Zedong has made the Chinese uneasy about lifetime tenure. The justification for these unlimited terms is about having a strong, dependable leader fulfilling a multi-decade role transforming the country from developing to developed.
