Making History in Pittsburgh
The first African to become a Major League Baseball player might be coming to a ballpark near you! Gift Ngoepe, born in South Africa, had been playing for the Pittsburgh Pirate’s Triple-A team in Indianapolis until he was called up last Wednesday. He recorded his first big-league hit against the Chicago Cubs that night, and was a perfect 3-3 at the plate in his first start on Friday. Just suiting up for the game was a major milestone for Ngoepe and the sport of baseball. This isn’t the first time the Pirates have made baseball history, as they called up the first Lithuania-born MLB player to pitch on Monday.
