A Monumental Controversy
Four monuments are scheduled to be relocated in New Orleans and the first, the Battle of Liberty Place monument, was taken down Monday evening. This is a controversial removal: city officials have been trying to move the monuments since 2015 and multiple groups have come out in opposition to this. The monuments are symbols of the Confederation and they “failed to appropriately reflect the values of diversity and inclusion that make New Orleans strong today,” the city said. This project is so controversial that there were snipers positioned to protect the workers as they took the monument down under the cover of night. The company also covered its logo on trucks and equipment used during the operation. This tension is not so Dixieland Delightful y’all.
