A Long-Awaited Homecoming
President Trump has recently negotiated the release of an Egyptian-American and her Egyptian husband after they were imprisoned in Egypt for nearly 3 years. The charges against the couple were dropped on Sunday and they have moved back to the United States. Aya Hijazi, an aid worker who ran a nonprofit organization that took in street children in Cairo, was arrested in 2014. The Egyptian government charged her with child abuse, but the prosecutors never proved their case and Hijazi was held without a trial. Many human rights groups have said the arrest was part of a larger Egyptian effort to shut down nongovernment organizations.
