Free School in New York
New York became the first state to make four-year public colleges tuition-free. The state has introduced this plan as the “Excelsior Scholarship” which undergraduate students at SUNY (State University of New York) or CUNY (City University of New York) schools will be eligible for, as long as their family’s income doesn’t exceed $100,000. This income cap is set to rise in the coming years, to $110,000 next year and to $125,000 by 2019. Other stipulations the Excelsior Scholarship has in place are that the student must be enrolled full-time, graduate on time and after they graduate they must stay in New York for the same amount of time that they received the scholarship.
