How Uber Skirt's the Authorities
Uber has been using a nifty new algorithm to evade authorities in cities that don’t want the company operating in them: Greyball. This program uses data collected in the Uber app to detect users that summon a ride who are city officials looking to stop Uber’s operations. When the technology tags a sketchy user, it will notify the Uber driver to cancel the ride and then display ‘ghost cars’ on the maps. By using Greyball, Uber is showing the world that it’s not going anywhere, regardless of whether the world’s cities like it or not.
