It's Official: Brexit Begins
In an address to the House of Commons, Theresa May, the British Prime Minister, confirmed that the U.K. formally activated Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, meaning that the U.K. now has 2 years to undergo a legal process to exit the European Union. Article 50 was initiated via a British Permanent Representative to the EU delivering a formal notification to the European Council in Brussels, Belgium. “The Article 50 process is now under way, and in accordance with the British People, the United Kingdom is leaving the European Union," May stated. The official start to Brexit begins 9 months after the U.K. voted to leave the EU in a controversial referendum.
