According to reports, in a recent meeting with Angela Merkel, President Donald Trump handed the German chancellor a bill to the tune of $374 billion for her country’s failure to pay its fair share in NATO defense spending. Trump has been very outspoken in his desire to see NATO allies meet their pledge to spend at least two percent of their GDP on defense, and the president reiterated this sentiment during a joint press conference with Merkel on March 17th. The number on the check was calculated based on how much German spending has fallen short of the goal since 2002. The White House has denied the report.
