Sexual Abuse Survivor Steps Down from Vatican Panel
Marie Collins, who was sexually abused by a priest at the age of 13, decided to step down from the initiative started by Pope Francis to be proactive about the known issue of sexual abuse committed by Catholic priests. Collins resigning from the panel, created to protect minors from sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, is a direct response to her expressing that there is cultural resistance to change in the church. She told CBS News, “It was better for me to come out and speak about it... I felt I could do more outside than inside.” Although she claimed that Pope Francis’s efforts were sincere, she wasn’t hearing what she wanted to from the Church and claimed that the men that run the Catholic Church “thrive on silence and cover-up.”
