Ben Carson is the New HUD Secretary
Ben Carson, neurosurgeon and former Republican presidential nominee, was confirmed on Thursday, March 2nd as the new head of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He was confirmed by the Senate with a vote of 58-41. His responsibilities will include overseeing a $49 billion budget, supporting more than 5 million living spaces around the country, as well as programs to assist low-income Americans who want to move up to the middle class. Some have voiced concern that Carson is not qualified due to his lack of political experience. Progressives are worried that Carson’s conservative tendencies will lead him to cut government funding that provides a “social safety net.” Carson has not definitively said what he will do in regards to cutting costs, just that he promotes finding ways to get people to be able to support themselves and not rely on government aid. He assured the Senate at his confirmation that his experiences rising from an underprivileged life to that of a renowned neurosurgeon gives him what he needs to take this job.
