Yesterday, the Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos yesterday as Secretary of Education. The vote in the Senate was originally split 50-50 which gave Vice President Mike Pence the opportunity to cast the historic tie-breaking vote. It was the first time in history that any Vice President had to be summoned to the Capitol to break a tie on a cabinet nomination. DeVos has dedicated most of her life to expanding educational choice, advocating through charter schools and voucher programs. Republicans describe Ms. DeVos as someone who is committed and puts the well-being of children above all else, while Democrat opposition claims that DeVos could not possibly have any experience in public school education because of her socioeconomic background and the fact that neither herself nor her children ever attended a public school. Only time will tell how DeVos performs.
