Romanian Protests Lead to Decree Repeal
A proposal in Romania to ease penalties for official corruption sparked protests in the capital Sunday night. These protests put enough pressure on the new government of Romania to repeal the decree. Protesters gathered outside of government offices waving Romanian flags and using cell phone lights to brighten the night sky. Many have compared the protests to the anti-government protests in 1989 which overthrew dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, though there wasn't any physical conflict during Sunday’s protest. Although the proposal was repealed, its legality will still be determined by Romania’s Constitutional Court.
