In a surprising statement, a Taliban leader issued a public call for Afghans to plant more trees on Sunday. Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzad’s letter, which was published in four languages including English, asks Afghans to come together for the sake of the environment, citing environmentalist words from the Prophet Muhammed. The announcement has been met with some skepticism, as some believe it is an attempt by the Taliban to deceive public opinion in their favor. Most of Afghanistan’s large cities suffer from air pollution with over 4,000 dying each year in Kabul from air pollution-related causes.
