Germany’s interior ministry has released findings from 2016, showing that there were nearly 10 attacks on migrants in Germany every day in 2016. This comes after Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to open up Germany to refugees polarized the country. In all, a total of 560 people were injured in the violence, including 43 children. The issue is likely to be heavily debated in upcoming elections as fears rise over security following multiple terrorist attacks across Europe. Even still, the number of asylum seekers arriving in Germany has dropped significantly to 280,000 from 2015. The interior ministry condemns the violence, stating in its report that "people who have fled their home country and seek protection in Germany have the right to expect safe shelter.”
