“Am I normal?” is a question that pops up among adolescents everywhere. India is no exception, and the Indian Health ministry sparked congratulations and controversy as they introduced a new sex-ed manual that assures teens that romantic feelings are indeed normal – for the opposite gender or the same. Although this is only a small section of a pamphlet that aims to encourage safe sex and improved knowledge all over the country, it is this one sentence that has attracted the most attention in a country that has been traditionally anti-homosexuality. India may still have a long way to go, but health officials are saying this is a step in the right direction.
