Tension in the South China Sea
The United States has deployed a naval fleet to patrol the South China Sea despite recent warnings from China against infringing on their sovereignty in the area. Officials are calling the activity part of ‘routine operations.’ The sea is an area of diplomatic tension because China has been creating artificial islands in this area and establishing airstrips on them, extending into what most of the world considers to be international waters. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson believes China has no legitimate claim on their holdings in the South China Sea, which could have prompted the United States’ new involvement in the area.
