California Areas Evacuated Following Dam Problems
The dam controlling Lake Orovill in California became a reason for concern following damages to its emergency spillway. The spillway, which helps protect from water rushing over the top of the dam when levels get too high, was damaged by erosion. This prompted the mandatory evacuation of about 188,000 people from their homes surrounding the dam. Helicopters have been dropping rocks into the damaged portion of the spillway in order to try and plug the hole. The emergency evacuations were reversed Tuesday evening, but authorities still worry that the dam will again be overwhelmed by another wave of rainfall set to begin Wednesday night.
