Trump and Xi: A Budding Bromance?
Yesterday President Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing as part of his five-nation tour of Asia. He took a stark turn from the usual icy attitude towards China that America’s recent leaders have had due to the trade imbalance and China’s alliance with North Korea. In talks held on Thursday, however, Trump called Xi a “special man” and said the blame for the unfair trade relationship with China laid on past US administrations, not China. Mr. Trump also pronounced his faith in China fixing the problem of North Korea’s nuclear program because if Mr. Xi “works on it hard, it’ll get done.” This marks a change from Trump’s Twitter rhetoric towards China in the past few months, leading some to wonder if Trump is softening up on his original tough love policy towards China.
