President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, the world’s oldest living leader at 93, was placed on house arrest as the military seized control of the capital on Wednesday morning. An army spokesman has denied that a military coup is taking place even though armored cars have been seen around the capital building since Tuesday afternoon, the military is in control of the state TV network, and Mugabe has not been seen publicly. Tensions started to escalate two weeks ago when President Mugabe fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and it was widely believed that he planned to appoint his wife, Grace Mugabe, to be his successor.
