Putin Protesters Arrested in the Hundreds
Happy Birthday, Putin! Saturday, October 7th, Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president since his current term began in 2012, turned 65. To honor this special day, hundreds of Russian citizens protested against him. There were dozens of marches held across the country in support of Putin’s political rival, activist Alexei Navalny, currently serving 20 days in jail for holding an unauthorized public meeting. In total, 290 protesters were arrested in 26 cities. Navalny has been in jail 3 times this year. He claims the convictions were “bogus” and another attempt by Putin to keep him from running in the coming March election. Protesters were advocating Putin’s retirement and Navalny’s release. People are also fed up with governmental censorship and a lack of freedom of speech. They believe that Navalny is their hope for change.
