Senate Republicans Consider Gun Control Legislation
For decades, many of the Republicans in Congress have blocked gun control legislation, even in the wake of many shootings. However, in light of the Las Vegas massacre, the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history with almost 60 fatalities and 500 injured, there is talk of change. The shooter, Stephen Paddock, used a “bump stock” (a type of gun conversion kit which transforms shotguns into semiautomatic weapons) to commit his crime. Texas Senator John Cornyn, said he supports the American right to bear arms, but does not see the use in civilians having access to conversion kits, calling it a “legitimate question” the Senate should consider. Senators of Florida, South Carolina, and Utah are also considering this legislative proposal. There is similar talk in the House of Representatives, but there could be backlash and no action is guaranteed yet.
