The Opioid Crisis is a Public Health Emergency
It is official: on Thursday, President Trump announced that the American opioid crisis is a public health emergency. Trump had already declared the opioid crisis a “national emergency” back in August, but he had not signed a legal directive designating it as such or allocating funding to fight the crisis. This memorandum will now allow federal grant money to be allocated to fight the epidemic that has claimed tens of thousands of lives. While some say that Trump’s efforts have not been enough, others say this decree marks a “symbolic step that [will] raise awareness and spark a new sense of urgency to deal with the opioid scourge.”
