The Air Force is in a Personnel Crisis
On Friday, President Trump amended an executive order, expanding the amount of retired Air Force officers that can be recalled to service. This decision comes amid a shortage of 1,000 Air Force officers. The fight against terror groups in the Middle East over 20 years, as well as expanded duties in Asia and Europe, has stretched the Air Force’s capabilities. There isn’t a recruiting problem though. Air Force officials have stated they are actually having trouble training all their recruits as experienced pilots are on long deployments elsewhere. Long deployments, coupled with competition from airlines, have led to a retention problem. To train and retain pilots, the Air Force plans to provide more flexible hours, raising bonuses, cutting lengthy deployments, and providing alternative methods of training.
