Penn State, Paterno, and a Scandal
On Saturday during Penn State’s football game against Temple, former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was honored for the 50th anniversary of his first game as head coach. Paterno was head coach for 46 years before he was accused of ignoring the child sexual abuse scandal of assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Paterno was fired after Sandusky was arrested and died shortly after in 2012. The tribute this weekend was very controversial; it was received by a standing ovation by some and turned backs by others. This is similar to reactions to the entire scandal. Critics believe that it is insensitive for the school to continue to celebrate him, but many still do for his countless achievements as a coach.
