French Police Make Women Strip Down on the Beach
A Burkini is a full body swimsuit that was created to be in line with Islamic values and allow Muslim women to participate in recreational swimming. Last week, on the beaches of France, police officers were writing women tickets for wearing a burkini and demanding that they take them off. This “Burkini Ban” was backed with a rule that beach wear “must be respectful of good public manners and the principle of secularism.” France’s highest court has suspended the ban, stating that individual liberties should not be restricted by local authorities with no risk to public order. France’s secularism strives to separate religion from their entire national identity, and has led to bans which some believe has disproportionately targeted Muslims and minority religious communities.
