How About Them Apples?
On Tuesday the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Samsung in its case against Apple regarding design patents. It was a unanimous decision that the patent infringement was not on the device as a whole, rather it was the physical appearance of the phone. The ruling means that Samsung may not have to pay infringement penalties that originally were near one-billion dollars, and were later reduced to over half a million. From here the case will go to the U.S. Court of Appeals to determine if Samsung will have to fork over the money. This is the first design patent case to reach the Supreme Court in over 100 years.
