Flag Burnings: the Hottest Topic of 2016
“Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!” This controversial quote was tweeted by President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, possibly in regards to flag burnings protesting his approaching presidency. The right to burn the flag has been ruled as protected by the First Amendment in the Supreme Court, although it remains a divisive topic among the American people. This is the latest attempt by Trump to question just how far the First Amendment goes to protect freedom of speech.
