Turkish Police Shut Down TV Station
On Tuesday, Turkish police ordered IMC TV to be shut down by an emergency decree. The station is associated with the banned Kurdistan Workers Party that has been blamed for many bombings in Turkey this year. As authorities entered the control room, IMC staff chanted, “free media will not be silenced.” After the failed military coup in Turkey, the government had ordered a state of emergency that has allowed them to shut down television and radio networks on the grounds that they are broadcasting “terrorist propaganda.” Twenty networks have been ordered off air since the state of emergency was declared. The shut down networks were mainly those affiliated with the country's minority groups including the Kurdish and the Alevi.
