Hurricane Matthew Hits Defenseless Haiti
On Tuesday morning, Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on Haiti as it hit the southwestern coast, threatening huge amounts of damage and potential loss of lives. This devastating storm comes only six years after Haiti was hit by an earthquake that left the entire country in pieces and took over 200,000 Haitian lives. Haiti had made some effort to prepare for the storm, but a majority of the country lives in shantytowns that will not withstand the winds of a hurricane. After hitting Haiti, the storm is predicted to continue on to Cuba and eventually Florida, where evacuations are already taking place.
