The Afghan girl featured on a famous 1984 issue of National Geographic has been arrested in Pakistan and could face up to 14 years in prison. Sharbat Gula is charged with obtaining and using a false ID card to stay in Pakistan and avoid returning to her home in war-torn Afghanistan. Relatives say Gula had attempted to return to her native village this summer, but found it abandoned due to ISIS. Pakistan has provided Afghan refugees safe heaven since the Russian invasion in 1979, yet officials have cracked down on false papers in recent months, and many feel as though the March 2017 deadline to return home to Afghanistan may be a final decision.
