Live From New York It's Premiere Night!
Saturday Night Live kicked off its 42nd season this weekend with host Margot Robbie and musical guest The Weeknd. The comedy show also saw its best premiere rating since 2012, which, incidentally, was also an election year. SNL has long been influential in the way the public perceives American politics, and they continued that Saturday night with a cold open parodying the recent debate. Alec Baldwin made his Donald Trump debut against Kate McKinnon’s – Emmy-winning – Hillary Clinton. The open was much anticipated and may have sealed the ratings hike in addition to Robbie’s performance as a vapid Ivanka Trump and a racy but psychotic librarian. SNL looks to capitalize once again on wild popularity with next week’s host, Hamilton-creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
