Forces are making important gains in the fight to take back the northern Iraqi city of Mosul from ISIS, yet a long fight to retake the city is still expected. Mosul rests as the last important ISIS stronghold in Iraq, and according to US officials, many top leaders have likely already fled the city. Of the 5,000 ISIS fighters believed to be in the city, foreign fighters are expected to make the offensive a difficult task, with the possibility of human shields and chemical weapons being used. There are believed to be 1.5 million civilians still in the city, as ISIS is not allowing them to leave. It could take several months for the city to be retaken.
