Rolling Stone on Trial
In November 2014, Rolling Stone magazine published an article that detailed the claims of a woman called “Jackie”; that she was raped and beaten by several men at a fraternity party in 2012 at the University of Virginia. The article drew much attention and scrutiny because of its reliance on only one source, the victim. Once the police investigated, they found no evidence of rape. The magazine apologized the next month for its failing in reporting and shortly after, retracted the story. But they are now being sued by Nicole Eramo, the previous dean of students at the University of Virginia, who counseled Jackie during the original ordeal. The lawsuit is for defaming the University of Virginia and Eramo and accusing her of convincing Jackie not to report the rape. The trial will start today, with rumors that Jackie will testify.
