Washington DC wants to become the 51st state. Their Mayor, Muriel Bowser, stated earlier this week that the District of Columbia demands equal representation, full rights of citizenship, and local control over their laws and budget. In order to get statehood, there would need to be a majority vote from both chambers of Congress. This would be a difficult task because both chambers have a Republican majority, and DC is overwhelmingly Democratic. The proposed new state would be called New Columbia and would not include the Capitol, White House, Supreme Court, or National Mall.
