In July 2015, a black woman named Sandra Bland drew the nation's eye after a video of her being violently arrested by a police officer for a traffic stop surfaced, and 3 days later she was found hanging dead in her jail cell. Her death, though ruled a suicide, sparked major debate over minorities treatment by law enforcement. The officer who stopped her was fired, and is being charged for perjury regarding his testimony of his actions. But Bland will not be forgotten- a street leading to Prairie View A&M University, where Bland graduated, was just named Sandra Bland Parkway earlier this week.
